Hiragana and Katakana are the two syllabaries used in the Japanese writing system. English speakers typically start with these two when attempting to learn written Japanese, before moving on to tackling Chinese characters or Kanji. Please note that I have used JSL for romanization, simply because it's what I used when I was learning Japanese.
